Kaitlin Grant McGirr, AMFT

THERAPIST

Kaitlin (pronouns: she/they) is an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist. She believes that whatever is bringing you into therapy, it is vital that therapy is a safe and affirming place. She views therapy as a collaborative space for both client and therapist to bring their authentic selves in and deconstruct present difficulties in the client’s life. They prioritize building safe and strong relationships with their clients so that therapy can feel like a comfortable space to be your true self. They work from a social justice, anti-racist, anti-heterosexism, feminist approach that welcomes people from all walks of life, cultures, and identities.

Oftentimes our present narratives about our problems are not useful and prohibit us from healing. Kaitlin views a part of her role is to bring light to these unhelpful narratives, which have been influenced through stigma, societal expectations, and their family of origin, and empower their clients to rewrite their narratives and begin to heal. Kaitlin views problems through a systemic lens, which considers the larger context of the issues we face in our lives and how our identities shape our experiences. As a queer person who grew up in the South, they personally understand some of the challenges of marginalized folx, however, they believe that each person has unique experiences that inform how they view the world. Kaitlin listens openly and empathically to their clients’ experiences without jumping to conclusions based on their identities. Kaitlin recognizes how difficult talking about and processing past traumatic experiences can be and they work from a trauma-informed lens that centers client well-being and allows for flexibility in the therapeutic space based on her clients’ needs.

Kaitlin’s clinical interests include working with the LGBTQIA+ community, relationship issues and conflict, depression, anxiety, identity exploration, intergenerational trauma, life and relationship transitions, intercultural relationships, and emotional regulation. Kaitlin pulls from Attachment, Systems, and Queer theories and often uses methods from Narrative, Emotion-Focused, and Contextual modalities in their clinical work.

Kaitlin received their Master of Science in Couple and Family Therapy from the University of Maryland and received their Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Texas State University.

They are supervised by Nosheen Hydari, LMFT.
